NINETIES, BABY | 3 Throwback Summer Trends We're Totally Feeling

via Tendances de Mode

I won't tell you how old I am but let's just say that I remember the '90s. I remember them well. And I recall that for me, my sister's closet played a starring role. She was four years older, and I was old enough to know better - but that didn't stop me from devising 007-worthy tactics to raid her closet. She had the BEST wardrobe. I'm talking denim distressed in all the right places, perfectly worn leather belts, baggy boyfriend shirts & super soft tees, oversized blazers & body-hugging bodysuits that I had absolutely no chance of filling out (sadly). She had a job and I didn't, so she bought her own clothes while I had to make do with very uncool hand-me-downs. That first time I wore one of her jackets to school, let's just say that she wasn't super stoked to find it lying crumpled up on my bedroom floor. And the time after, once she'd put a sister-proof lock on her bedroom door which I figured out how to bypass with a bobbypin, she was even less stoked.

My obsession with my sister's '90s closet taught me two important lessons: 1) Never, ever touch your older sister's stuff. Definitely not worth it. I should know. and 2) If the opportunity ever presents itself to score an epic '90s wardrobe once you can actually afford to buy your own things, take it.

Luckily, some of my fave obsessions from the '90s are back and I can't wait to live in them this summer. Slinky slipdresses can go from sexy for date nights to playful by adding a little white tee underneath.  Sleek bodysuits are amazing for taking the frump-factor out of this season's high-waisted pants & shorts. And long blazers (either floral kimono-style or boss-babe businessy), look great with jogger-style pants (as shown below) or with distressed pale denim shorts (see above). Scroll down for some '90s summer outfit inspo, courtesy of my perenially cool sis (who has hopefully forgiven me by now) ;)

Everything Old is New Again

Stuck in a middle-of-summer rut? Why not try out an oldie but a goodie with one of these 5 tested but true trends...

TREND #1: OWLS Owls and other woodland creatures were huge in the '70s, then big again with Burberry for Fall 2012, but the feathered creatures aren't going away anytime soon. We like 'em best in grown-up metallics and muted tones against sophisticated black or crisp white (see the Mulberry Fall '13 Campaign) to look sophisticated, not sophomoric. The other flying creature making major buzz right now? The hardworking honeybee. Bzzzzz...

TREND #2: BACKPACKS You might be surprised by the current It bag: the practical '80s backpack is back in a big way for the over-20 crowd, thanks to cool prints and super sleek designs. We're particularly loving the chic Danier and Roots leather versions for Fall.

Pebble Leather Backpack, $199, Danier; Printed Backpack, $26.99, Payless; Director's Pack, $348, Roots; Student Pack, $238, Roots; Camo Backpack, $30 Aeropostale.

TREND #3: STACKS OF RINGS While I still love a good arm party, it's all about loading up on rings again for the new season. Stick with gold or silver, mix your metals, stack them up, or wear them on every finger. No matter how you rock 'em, you'll draw loads of attention to your hands so be sure to keep your mani up-to-date.

Mixed Metal Rings, 3 for $10, Ardene; Statement Ring, $10, ALDO; Love Ring 4-Pack, $4, Aeropostale; Rose Gold Ring Stack, $15.50, American Eagle; Star Ring Set, $2, Garage

TREND #4: SLIP DRESSES While we usually like to hide our lingerie, now's the time to show it off. In a nod to the '90s, NSFW slip dresses are back again. Look for delicate straps, lacy fabrics and sheer details (just make sure the dress is well-lined or well, you know...)

Sleeveless Crochet Dress, $30, Dynamite; High-Low Chiffon Dress, $29.90, Garage; Lace Babydoll Dress, $34.90, Garage; Cheetah Dress, $39.90, Dynamite; Chiffon Dress, $29.90, Garage; Lace Sheath Dress, $59.99, Ricki's

TREND #5: TOUGH BOOTS Practically perfect for Fall, the tough '90s boot has returned for women who want to give their wardrobe a little edge. Stomp around in lace-up boots or Doc Martens with buckles, grommets and studs for instant urban attitude.

Studded Lace Boots, $49.99, American Eagle; UGG Gillespie Boots, $397.99, Sportchek; Combat Boots, $48.50, Aeropostale; Combat Boot, $48.50, Aeropostale; Vintage Rose Dr Martens, $159.99, Soft Moc
