TRANSITIONAL DRESSING 101 | How to Look Spring-Ready Right Now

via Telegraph.co.uk

Each year, Canadians can always count on certain sure signs that winter's on its way out. Whether it's that first crocus popping out of your garden or that dude who rocks shorts and sandals on the first warm day of the year, it's easy to tell when the warm weather's almost here. Emphasis on the almost. Spring likes to tease us with its flashes of sun and double digits one day, then wallop us with snow the next. Sure, dressing is a little tricky this time of year, but that shouldn't stop you from wearing your spring things now. I'm not going to wait for the weather to make up its mind - after all, my mind's already made up. I'm in love with all of the brights and florals and whites that signal the start of the warm season. Luckily, we don't have to wait any longer to wear this season's freshest finds - simply mix your winter and spring pieces to make transitional dressing a total breeze. Read on for how to look spring-ready right now. Happy weekend!

WHITE OUT | 45 Reasons We're Obsessing Over Summer Whites

via the most gorgeous Rosie Huntington Whiteley on Instagram

As spring turns to summer, I like to switch up my black pieces for cool, bright white. I have a dog, I have young kids and I'm as clumsy as they come but still - I'm willing to risk it all for white. I have a growing collection of classic white shirts, an eyelet obsession that just won't quit and of course, I'm always on the hunt for that perfect pair of white jeans. Just me?

The stores are stocked with so many pretty white pieces that I just had to share. Luckily, you can get away with spending less on summer clothes and still walk away looking like you've splurged.  The key? Stick with solids. Nothing looks cooler than wearing your white from head to toe, so for those willing to brave it, remember that if you're going to do solid whites, mix up textures to give your outfit flow. Try a white denim skirt with a canvas belt and a plain white tee. Or try white jeans with a floaty boho blouse and block-heel sandals. If you love the neutral look but don't want to go head-to-toe, mix up your white with black, grey or tan. And, obviously, white makes every colour of the rainbow pop so pair up white jeans with a bold tangerine tank or denim off-the-shoulder top, or pick a white eyelet blouse to wear with pink crops.

Ok, down to business. Here are 45 reasons we're currently obsessing over summer whites. Um, might want to add bleach to your shopping list...

WHITE ON: Our Fav White Picks

It takes a brave woman to wear white. Mud, medium double doubles, toddlers covered in strawberry jam - the world is a minefield for a girl wearing all white. And yet, nothing screams summer like the crisp, clean hue. You'd think white would be boring but it's not. And even though every fashion expert proclaims the need to wear white all year round, it feels especially right once May arrives.

The Spring '14 runways were filled with chic white looks, worn head-to-toe, with stark black, and with spring's prettiest pastels. Designers never tire of the non-colour colour and reinvent it season after season. This year, you'll find white tanks and blouses with loads of cool features like cut-outs, draped panels and laser-cut details. The little white dress has all but replaced the LBD as summer's frock of choice, and comes in styles to flatter every body. And accessories in white are a huge spring story, from modern necklaces to the coolest shoes.

We've rounded up our favourite white essentials in stores now, perfect for the steamy summer months ahead...Happy Friday!

The White Essential: A Layered Tank

Why We Love It: Time to update your plain white tank with something a little more chic this summer. If you're going to go for solid white, look for interesting texture, layered details and drapey cuts to subtly glam up your dress pants and blazers at work.

Our Pick: Crepe de Chine Sleeveless Blouse, $39.95, Le Château

The White Essential: A Sleek White Handbag

Why We Love It: White might not be the most practical choice but isn't that the point? A handbag, if nothing else, is supposed to be fun! A diminutive crossbody like this one is perfect for those times when you don't need a lot of baggage - think a dinner date, a shopping afternoon or any time your kids are with the babysitter.

Our Pick: The Duo Leather Handbag, $158, Roots

The White Essential: An Embellished Sweatshirt

Why We Love It: Anyone else sick of their old sweatshirts? We can't wait to update our weekend wardrobes with this embellished beauty, perfect whether you're running errands or firmly planted on the couch.

Our Pick: Embellished Sweatshirt, $49, Bootlegger

The White Essential: White Sandals

Why We Love Them: Birks have been around forever but did you know they've been dubbed this year's coolest sandal? From supermodels to Vogue editors, everyone's rocking the humble sandal right now with their shorts, skirts and dresses. We love them most in bright summer white.

Our Pick: Birkenstock Gizeh Sandal, $109.99, Soft Moc

The White Essential: A White Timepiece

Why We Love It: White iPhones are great but it's smart to also keep a back-up on your wrist so that you're not (too) fashionably late. Let's face it, though, watches now are way more about fashion than function - this one looks amazing layered up with loads of stretchy arm-party bracelets.

Our Pick: Nixon The Kensington Watch, $200, West 49

The White Essential: Flattering White Skinnies

Why We Love Them: White jeans are easy to find, but flattering white jeans? Not so much. Thank goodness for Yoga Jeans by Second Denim - always flattering, crazy comfy and not see-through. They come in loads of fits for different body types from skinny to flare, from low-rise to high and they're 100% made in Canada. Oh, aaand, on a BOGO sale right now, btw.

Our Pick: Second Yoga Skinny Jeans (available in low, mid and high-rise), $120, Jean Machine

The White Essential: A White Statement Necklace

Why We Love It: A white necklace goes with everything in your closet and will make you look in-the-know at the office, at a backyard barbecue, or on a white hot date.

Our Pick: Gemstone Collarbone Necklace, $19.95, Le Château

The White Essential: A Lightweight Knit

Why We Love It: A slouchy white sweater is the perfect layering piece, whether you're freezing in your air-conditioned office or feeling the chill of a cool summer evening. This one looks so comfy, we'd probably wear it poolside over a bathing suit, too.

Our Pick: Open Knit V-Neck Sweater, $39, American Eagle

The White Essential: An Edgy Vest

Why We Love It: Style ruts happen to the best of us. One easy way to break free? A cute vest (a Montréalaise staple) will instantly update your go-to tees, tanks and shorts.

Our Pick: Solid Vest, $39, Smart Set

The White Essential: White Accented Sunglasses

Why We Love Them: All-white sunglasses have a tendency to look cheesy so it's usually best to avoid them altogether. This pair, though, has just the right amount of white to take these sporty shades from average to ah-MA-zing.

Our Pick: Tory Burch Sporty Sunglasses, $220, Sunglass Hut

The White Essential: A Great White Tee

Why We Love It: A plain white tee is an absolute must, but you already knew that, so we thought we'd feature a tee with a story. This gorgeous limited-edition tee designed by world-renowned model and celebrity DJ, Eve Salvail, has been created for a future without breast cancer. Net profits from the sales of the tees will be contributed to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Our Pick: TEE Collection by Eve Salvail, $25, Reitmans

The White Essential: Anything Eyelet

Why We Love It: Whether you're a good girl gone bad or a bad girl gone good (or anywhere in between), eyelet just exudes innocence. This knotted tank is super sweet, and would look amazing with everything from white skinnies to a black maxi skirt.

Our Pick: Guess Eyelet Tie Top, $69.50, Bootlegger

The White Essential: A Braided Belt

Why We Love It: A braided belt is super versatile, perfect for adding a boho vibe to your dresses, jeans and bright pants. And while the weather slooowly heats up, you can even use it to cinch the waist of your trench.

Our Pick: Braided Leather Belt, $28, American Eagle

The White Essential: A Little White Dress

Why We Love It: A sweater knit converted into a flattering fit and flare makes this a little white dress you can't live without. Wear it with nude sandals (and a little tan) for ultimate long-legginess all summer long, or follow the lead of the world's most fashionable and pair it with a pair of chic sneakers (see below).

Our Pick: Pointelle Knit Fit & Flare Dress, $110, Le Château

The White Essential: White Converse Kicks

Why We Love Them: Parisian women have been rocking Converse for years but this season, they're especially on trend. Wear these with everything from your super casual jean shorts to your summer dresses (see above). SO much less expected (and way more comfy) than teetering around in heels, no?

Our Pick: Women's Chuck Taylors, $59.99, Soft Moc
